1. Wearing your seat belt can make a significant difference. During a crash, being buckled up keeps you safe inside of your vehicle, those who are thrown out of a vehicle during a crash usually do not make it. Seat belts are by far the best defense against aggressive, distracted, and impaired drivers.
2. Air Bags are not a replacement for seat belts. If you are not wearing your seat belt at the time of an accident and your air bag goes off and you are thrown hard enough against it you could still lose your life. It is much safer to wear your seat belt even when an air bag is present.
3. Wear your seat belt properly. The lap belt should be secured across the pelvis and the shoulder belt should be secured over the rib cage. Never put the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm. Be sure the shoulder belt is away from your neck.
4. Get a seat belt that fits. Before buying a new car test out the seat belt. If the seat belt is to big or to little you need to talk to the dealer about seat belt adjusters for that vehicle. Also if you own and drive a classic car with only a lap belt you should talk to the manufacturer about installing newer and safer seat belts.
